BY ANY MEANS OF MAKING
By Any Means of Making is an intention to create with any resources we have available and democratize the knowledge to do so. Whether it be zines printed from local libraries or rubber eraser stamps step-and-repeated into a mosaic, these acts reclaim our ownership in education and part us from the systems
that bind us.
It is undeniable that a prominent aspect of the design industry functions off the backs of computers and Adobe products. This is an intimidating prospect to an individual who may want to only dip-a-toe into the proverbial waters to even decide if they would like to pursue graphic design. Or better yet a student in design forced to pay for more subscriptions than they can count, as well as a computer to boot that they can’t afford. These instances prevent some from the benefits of learning the design process and ways it could be applied to current or later projects. The average student at East Carolina University, including myself, are fortunate enough to have access to many resources that most would not have, or if they did, it would have come at a cost only afforded by those who’ve been graced by wealth. That’s not an option for many people unfortunately, especially with economic straits we have had and are currently facing. For most, none of this is new information. The costliness of higher education is a commonly voiced concern as well as a questioned modern working necessity. But for those in art & design, the core of what is truly needed is mentorship and a community of shared knowledge, not a vacuous hole to throw money into. To this point, the goal behind this research is to democratize education and breach the gap of knowledge to affordability through designing tactile material based learning activities.
